"Oh dear," Spark mumbled, his voice barely a whisper. He knew he had to help, but the thought of getting close to the strange creature filled him with dread. Taking a deep breath, he mustered up his courage and fluttered down to the ground.
"Hello?" Spark squeaked, his voice trembling slightly. "Are you alright?"
The bird, its feathers ruffled and its eyes wide with surprise, looked up at the tiny dragon. "I... I think I've hurt my wing," it chirped in a melodious voice.
Spark, emboldened by the bird's gentle tone, shuffled closer. He carefully examined the bird's wing, his large, emerald eyes filled with concern. "It looks like you sprained it," he said softly. "Don't worry, I'll help you."
Despite his fear of fire, Spark remembered his grandmother's teachings about using his fire for good. He closed his eyes, concentrating on the warmth in his belly, and focused it on his paw. To his surprise, a soft, warm glow emanated from his scales, not a scorching flame.
Gently, Spark placed his glowing paw on the bird's injured wing. The bird flinched at first, but then sighed in relief as a soothing warmth spread through its feathers. Slowly, the bird's tense muscles relaxed, and its breathing eased.
After a while, the bird flapped its wing tentatively. "It feels much better, thank you, little one," it chirped gratefully. "You have a remarkable gift."
Spark blushed a shade of pink, surprised by the compliment. He had never thought of his fire as a gift before.
The bird, introducing itself as Luna, a moonbeam hummingbird, explained that its wing had been injured during a storm. They spent the rest of the afternoon talking and getting to know each other. Spark learned about Luna's travels across the night sky, and Luna learned about Spark's fear of fire and his dream of one day soaring through the clouds.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the forest floor, Luna knew it was time to go. "Thank you again for your help, Spark," she said, nuzzling him gently with her beak. "You are a brave and kind dragon."
Spark, his heart filled with warmth, chirped back, "And you are a wonderful friend, Luna. Maybe someday, when I'm braver, I can fly you home."
Luna smiled. "Perhaps you will, little one. Perhaps you will." With a final farewell, Luna spread her wings and took to the twilight sky, leaving a trail of shimmering dust in her wake.
Spark watched her go, a newfound determination sparkling in his eyes. He may have been a small dragon with a big fear, but he had also discovered a hidden well of courage and a heart full of kindness. And who knew, maybe one day, he would even conquer his fear and soar amongst the stars.
