Millipedes are some of the oldest living animals on Earth, with fossil records dating back more than 400 million years. They belong to the class Diplopoda and have an exoskeleton composed of many small plates, which makes up their segmented body. Millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment while centipedes have only one pair per segment. Although millipedes are often thought of as pests, they also play important ecological roles such as breaking down dead material and helping to aerate soil. Millipedes can be found in a wide variety of habitats throughout the world, including tropical rainforests, deserts, grasslands and suburban gardens. Some species even live in trees! The coloration of millipedes can range from black to iridescent blue and purple. They can range in size from a few millimeters to up to several inches long. Millipedes are generally harmless to humans, but some species do produce toxins as a defense against predators. These toxins have been used historically for medicinal purposes. Millipedes also exhibit an interesting behavior called “curling up”. When threatened, millipedes will curl their body segments together into a tight ball, protecting their vulnerable undersides until the threat passes. This behavior is often seen in nature when millipedes are disturbed by predators or other environmental factors. Finally, millipede mating rituals can be quite complex and involve elaborate courtship dances and even fighting between males!
